Effect of Coating Thickness on Wear Behaviour of Monolithic Ni-P and Ni-P-NiTi Composite Coatings

Protective coatings can prolong the lifespan of engineering components. Electroless Ni-P coating is a very hard with high corrosion resistance, but low toughness. The addition NiTi nanoparticles into has shown potential to increase toughness electroless and could expand its usability as protective for more applications. However, study tribological behaviour wear mechanisms Ni-P-NiTi composite been minimal. Furthermore, there no studies on effect thickness monolithic behaviour. rates each were found by measuring volume loss form multi-pass tests. tracks examine using confocal microscope observe mechanisms. Each sample was tested spherical indenter sharp indenter. It that nanoparticle displayed toughening did improve coating’s resistance. 9 μm thick had less cracking uniform than coating. For both coatings, their thicker version higher resistance thinner counterpart. This explained often observed trend in where it tensile stress near substrate interface, which decreases becomes compressive increases. Overall, highest out all tested.
